Academic Information for Semester Abroad or Academic Year Abroad Programs

Academics are #1 with GlobaLinks Learning Abroad

Our semester abroad and academic year abroad direct enrollment study abroad programs allow you to take classes applicable to your degree program so that you can continue your academic progress while studying abroad. As a GlobaLinks Learning Abroad participant, you will work with a personal coordinator to select classes prior to departure, ensure course pre-approval, and transfer credits upon your return. No aspect of your academic plan will be overlooked.

Choosing the Best University for YOU

Selecting the "best" university for studying abroad is about choosing the best option for you based on your academic needs, cost, location, and activities outside the classroom. GlobaLinks Learning Abroad is happy to help you with this decisions making process! A great place to start is our online program search or call an advisor today at 1-800-980-0033.

Academic Enrollment and Credit Transfer

Most of our university partners around the world offer the same or similar degree programs as universities in the U.S. or Canada. This makes it easier for students to take classes that will transfer back to their home university and count as credits towards graduation. The home university has full discretion regarding transfer credit. GlobaLinks Learning Abroad requires the home university to pre-approve the classes students wish to take while abroad. We can assist with this process and works with all U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities.

Some subjects may require prerequisites before enrollment is granted. Final enrollments are completed from an approved list of subjects either online or upon arrival at the host university. GlobaLinks Learning Abroad cannot guarantee the availability of individual classes or admittance to any subject. Most U.S. and Canadian institutions will not accept transfer credit unless students obtain the equivalent grade of C- or better in their subjects. In some cases, subjects may be evaluated and transferred as Pass/Fail. To find out how courses will be transferred, please ask the study abroad or academic advisor at your home university.

Academic Calendar

Many overseas universities have a different academic calendar than the U.S./Canada:

In Europe:
The academic year typically begins in late September and runs through the end of June with a two to four week exam period at the end of the fall and spring terms. Fall exams take place in January, and Spring exams take place in May/June. Universities with this schedule sometimes allow fall study abroad students to take an early assessment in December to avoid missing the start of their spring semester back home. Contact Us for more information regarding this option. View specific program dates>

In Asia:
The academic year varies widely from country to country. Some universities operate on a trimester system, while others use a semester system. Regardless, start or end dates my overlap with your home university's academic schedule. View specific program dates>

In Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji:
The academic year in Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji runs from February to November with Semester 1 running February to June and Semester 2 running July to November. Two universities in Australia, however, offer trimester schedules with terms running from January to April, May to August, and September to December. View specific program dates>

School of Record

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad is proud to have The University of Minnesota, Twin Cities as the School of Record for all GlobaLinks Learning Abroad programs with a foreign issued transcript. This means that if you attend a university which requires a transcript from an accredited North American institution in order to transfer credit, you can obtain an official transcript from the University of Minnesota for your program abroad through this agreement (additional $350 fee will apply).
