All Students Are Welcome

"Studying abroad has changed me completely. Being away from home has taught me so much about my strength, endurance and relationships that I never knew before."
– K. Lund, Bethel University

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad is committed to increasing the ethnic diversity of our program participants to reflect the multicultural population of North America. We invite participation of students from all backgrounds to study on one of our outstanding programs offered at a wide variety of locations at an affordable cost. We work with all students and encourage participation by students from all backgrounds. Study Abroad can become reality for all students - yes, YOU!

The Value of Study Abroad

In an increasingly competitive job market international experiences will help set you apart. The academic, personal, and cultural skills that you will further develop and enhance through study abroad will prepare you for your future regardless of the career path you have chosen.

Many students express that the time abroad helped them confirm their career goals as well as offered a global and comparative perspective in their field of study. With careful planning and discussion with your academic advisors you are able to fulfill requirements of your major, minor and/or core classes so as to graduate on time. Through the experience you will gain a global perspective, learn or achieve fluency in a second language, meet people from throughout the world, and explore different cultures and your place in the world.

Sharing the Experience with Family and Friends

Students may be apprehensive about leaving their family and friends for study abroad. Global communications through email, Skype, and cell phones is easy and inexpensive assuring that you can be as connected with family and friends back home as if you were on your home university campus. Parents may also be concerned that their student may experience discrimination due to their ethnic background. GlobaLinks Learning Abroad enrollment coordinators and on-site residential staff are experienced in each destination and will help students prepare for their time abroad including what to expect and how to best integrate for a successful program. We are happy to speak with parents about any/all questions they may have. Contact us by phone at 1-800-980-0033 or by email at

You Can't Afford NOT to Go

While a semester/year abroad program may appear more expensive than study at your home university, the truth is that you cannot afford not to go! In today’s job market, employers are looking for global citizens with cross-cultural experience who can contribute to a multi-cultural work environment. Your international education experience is a character and resume-building opportunity that will benefit you long into your future.

"Since studying abroad I feel that I am more independent now, and I know I definitely want to travel more and see the world! Before coming to Australia I was reluctant to leave home. Now I know I can do it, and I know it’s not as scary as it seems!"

– A. Barton, University of Maryland Baltimore County

Diversity Scholarship

To demonstrate our commitment to increasing the ethnic diversity of our participants, we are pleased to offer a new Diversity Scholarship program for students participating on semester/year-long program through GlobaLinks Learning Abroad. The scholarships of $1,500 will be awarded to eligible students of ethnic minority who are willing to share their experience with family, friends, and student colleagues upon their return. Application is required and available upon acceptance to the program. We want you to bring the experience back home to your community.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

The U.S. Department of Education advises that the Perkins Loans, SSIG Grant Program, Pell Grants, FSEOG Grants, Stafford Loans, SLS Loans, PLUS Loans and Consolidation Loans can be used for study abroad. Your financial aid will continue to funnel through your home institution, so you should meet with your study abroad advisor and/or financial aid office to discuss your options for using financial aid for study abroad. GlobaLinks Learning Abroad can provide budget estimates and necessary paperwork to ease the transfer of your financial aid to pay for the program.

If you are not already qualified to receive financial aid, you can apply at your home institution and should begin this process as soon as possible. Also check with your study abroad office, financial aid office, or granting organization of the scholarships you may currently hold to determine which awards will transfer to your study abroad program.

Many of our Host University Partner institutions also offer additional scholarships specific to a university abroad. We also encourage you to apply for the $650,000 worth of scholarships available to students on GlobaLinks Learning Abroad programs. For more information on available scholarships click here.

Gilman Scholarship Program

Of special note to students is the Gilman Scholarship Program which offers awards averaging $4,000 to U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. A primary goal of the program is to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad, and the countries and regions where they go, by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. Approximately 1 in 3 Gilman applicants receive an award with application due dates generally 6 – 12 months prior to the study abroad start date.

Planning Ahead

It is important while you plan for your experience abroad that you consider all of the costs associated with living abroad. You should review the program carefully to determine exactly what is included in the program fees. Once you have decided on a specific program, we can provide you with a detailed estimate of all expenditures associated with your time abroad to include tuition, guaranteed housing, food, travel, insurance, visa, and personal expenses.

Early application will assure that you are accepted with ample time to apply for other sources of scholarship and aid. Some scholarships may require a 3 to 12 month advance application so it is wise to plan accordingly. This lead time also gives you and your family the time needed to adequately prepare for your time abroad.
