Christine French
Personal Discovery

I had the opportunity to get involved with theater and community projects in Australia. The community project I was most involved with was Be Brave and Shave, a leukemia research fundraiser.

Semester Abroad: February 2010
Home University: South Dakota State University
Host University: Macquarie University
Major: Biology

How did you find out about this opportunity?

During orientation week at the university, booths were set up to make it easier to get involved. I found out about theater through one of those booths. I lived at the Macquarie Village at the university which is where I heard about Be Brave and

Shave.

What did you learn about yourself personally through this experience abroad?

Theater taught me that I can do things on my own. I made some international friends at Macquarie but none that were joining theater. I still joined the theater and made it into a play without the "safety-net" of a friend being there.

Be Brave and Shave taught me that participating in events like these are so good. I raised $521 for leukemia research and I was actually brave enough to shave my head! I use to have hair that went a couple of inches past my shoulders.

How will you use this experience in your future professional endeavors?

Theater experience will help me have more confidence when walking into new situations with new people.

Be Brave and Shave helped me realize that I am brave enough to do just about anything.

How did this experience help you adjust to life abroad?

Theater was a great way to meet Australian students, since other activities are overrun with international students. Be Brave and Shave was a good way to give back to the community.

What advice can you give to future students who are interested in being an active participant in their study abroad experience?

Give it a go! The only regret you will have is if you didn't try.
