How We Can Help GlobaLinks Learning Abroad works closely with education abroad advisors, academic advisors, and faculty to prepare students for a successful academic experience abroad. Our comprehensive services include:
- Program Match – We advise students on how to choose the best program for their personal goals. From academic requirements or special opportunities, such as a part-time internship or research study, we focus on finding the best academic match for all students. Suggest to your students to browse our section on programs by major, to do a search with our program finder, or to contact us for personalized assistance.
- Academic Planning - We provide academic planning assistance to help students select the right classes for their academic needs and require course approval by a home university advisor to ensure successful credit transfer upon return.
- Preparing for Academic Differences – In our pre-departure materials and on-site Bridging Cultures Programs, we outline important academic differences the students may experience while studying in their host countries.
- On-site Academic Mentors – Students will have access to on-site academic assistance throughout their program.
- Students with Disabilities – Most universities we partner with offer support services for students with learning disabilities. We work closely with students in need and their host universities to arrange a successful support system for learning at a new institution.
In Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific, Asia, and Europe a student's academic schedule fluctuates between lectures, tutorials (small group sessions), laboratory work, seminars, and library study. The tutorials may require students to prepare material, present a paper, read articles or participate in group discussion. Students generally concentrate on their major in the first year since there is not a "general studies" requirement like most U.S./Canadian four-year institutions and therefore introductory subjects may be more difficult than at a North American university.
The academic systems in all these regions place emphasis on independent study. This can be quite different to that experienced in the US/Canada. It is expected that students will research and write essay papers even from their first year. These written papers will make up large parts of the overall assessment with final exams making up to 60% of the final grade. It is not uncommon to have 1-2 exams or papers making up 100% of the grade.
The grading system typically works on a strict bell curve and students are expected to perform a great deal of independent study in order to achieve high marks. In general, students should be prepared for some differences between the overseas and the U.S./Canadian academic systems and be aware that they may experience a period of adjustment.
Many overseas universities have a different academic calendar than the U.S./Canada:
The academic year typically begins in late September and runs through the end of June with a two to four week exam period at the end of the fall and spring terms. Fall exams take place in January, and Spring exams take place in May/June. Universities with this schedule sometimes allow fall study abroad students to take an early assessment in December to avoid missing the start of their spring semester back home. The academic year varies widely from country to country. Some universities operate on a trimester system, while others use a semester system. Regardless, start or end dates my overlap with your home university's academic schedule. View specific program dates>
In Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji:
The academic year in Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji runs from February to November with Semester 1 running February to June and Semester 2 running July to November. Two universities in Australia, however, offer trimester schedules with terms running from January to April, May to August, and September to December. View specific program dates>
