Global Identity Course For Semester Abroad and Year Abroad Programs

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad is committed to giving students as many opportunities to enhance their experience abroad as possible. We are partnered with the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities to offer students an opportunity to participate in their Global Identity Course.

Overview

The Global Identity Course is an optional one-credit, online course that students take during their semester abroad to connect with their abroad experience on an even deeper level. The course is designed to give students some tangible learning outcomes from their study abroad journey to assist them in utilizing their experience abroad to reach their future goals – academically, personally, and professionally.

The course will help students:

  • Articulate the value of their experience to future employers, graduate or professional schools, and scholarship committees.
  • Demonstrate their intercultural development and skills that can be used as part of a professional portfolio in a job search or application for graduate/professional school by preparing key essays/documents.
  • Understand intercultural theories and interactions with cultural difference, as well as language-learning and intercultural communication strategies. These skills help students start to make connections between their study abroad experience and the broader range of skills connected with this experience, to become a competitive member of a global workforce.
The course is currently available only to students on a semester abroad program in Australia and New Zealand. We will be expanding to other destinations across Asia and Europe soon.

Academic Information

Currently students will receive one credit on a transcript from the University of  Minnesota - Twin Cities. Grades are not administered for the course. It is taken pass/fail due to the type of assignments, content, and grading conversions. If your institution requires a letter grade be given, it is possible we may be able to work this out on an individual or small group basis.

The course content is engaging, fresh, and current and will be updated each term so that it is relevant to the current student group going abroad. Assignments allow students to share their personal stories, perspectives and questions with a teaching assistant here in the U.S. via an online learning classroom. In addition students will benefit from interacting online with students in other programs around the globe as they share their stories abroad. All components of the course will help the student create a portfolio of resources to utilize upon their return the help them secure future opportunities be it graduate school, employment, or additional adventures abroad. The cost for the course is currently $525. – this cost is subject to change each term, so please contact us directly to ensure any changes in fees. Students are individually responsible for paying the course fees separate from the other fees in their account. If you are interested in setting up a direct bill option for your students or would like to make alternate billing arrangements, please contact our office directly for more details.

The Option to Include this Course as a Requirement for Your University

The Global Identity course is an optional course for students to really enhance their experience abroad. If you are interested in adding this option as a requirement for all your students attending a GlobaLinks Learning Abroad program, we can put the necessary processes in place so that all your students take advantage of this option. We are happy to work with your staff and faculty to find a course equivalency so that students can add this to their list of accomplishments from their semester abroad and have it documented on their transcripts.
