Korea University International Summer Campus - Summer or January Short Course


Overview

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad, formerly known as AsiaLearn, offers a summer program with Korea University. GlobaLinks Learning Abroad has designed this summer program with your individual student goals in mind. It is built around a unique Discovery Model which is delivered by some of the best staff in study abroad, both in the U.S. and overseas, in order to provide you with an individualized experience through discovery in 5 key areas: personal, academic, cultural, social, and career. This program provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn about South Korea through academic and cultural immersion during a 6-week summer program. Courses cover a wide range of subjects pertaining to international issues, with a particular emphasis on the East Asia region. Each class offers a full-semester of coursework condensed into six weeks of intensive study totaling 48 hours. 

Classes are held Monday through Thursday with excursions, cultural workshops, and guest lectures incorporated into the program to form a well rounded learning environment. Students can choose up to a maximum of three classes from the academic areas of:

  • Economics and Business
  • Humanities
  • Sociology and Cultural Studies
  • Law
  • Politics and International Relations
  • Science
  • Korean Studies
  • Korean Language
  • Fine Art/Design.

Except for Korean language classes, the medium of instruction for all courses is English.

Location

This program is offered at Korea University, which is located in Seoul, South Korea. Seoul is the financial, political, commercial, recreational, educational, and cultural center of Korea. There are 2 subway stations serving the campus making access to all the cities resources quick and easy.

But on campus students can easily avoid the distractions of the bustling city with the182 acre campus featuring stone architecture, sprawling lawns, seasonal trees and natural flora. KU is known to have one of the most beautiful campuses in Korea.

Academic Highlights

Students can take up to 3 classes, and each class is worth 3 academic credits. Each course offers a full-semester of coursework condensed into six weeks of intensive study totaling 48 hours. No prior knowledge of Korea is necessary for enrollment and, except for Korean language classes; the medium of instruction for all courses is English

Students can take up to a maximum of three courses and each is worth 3 credits. Classes are held daily except for Friday. Classes area available in:

Housing

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad students attending Korea University live in either CJ International House or Anam-Global House, both of which house international students.  Anam-Global house is the newest dorm on campus, opening in Fall 2013.

 

CJ International House and Anam-Global house offer double or triple rooms, each with an en suite bathroom, desk, and plenty of storage space.  Meals are not included, but available for purchase in on-site cafeteria.  The Korea University campus also has a variety of restaurants/cafeterias available, and many students choose to cook in the shared kitchens of CJ House or go to nearby restaurants. 

 

Scholarships Available

Korea University International Summer Campus supports GlobaLinks Learning Abroad study abroad students with two tuition waivers for the summer program.

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad strives to offer the most reasonable study abroad fees to Asia.  To further enhance the affordability of the semester/year study abroad programs, we encourage you to apply for scholarships through all available scholarship sources.  Learn more about our scholarship opportunities.

 

Korea University Scholarships

Korea University offers the opportunity for students to receive The Academic Excellence Award of Won 1,000,000. This scholarship is presented to any students who receive “A's” in three courses during the summer program.

There is no application form needed to be filled out and eligible students will be informed individually after the program finishes are transcripts are processed. The final results come out at the end of September, and Korea University will send the check directly to the student if they qualified for the award.
 

 

Special Progams/Excursions

Special Lectures

Notable experts from the Korean government, such as the Korean Ambassador to the USA and the foreign minister, will offer a series of discussion sessions.

 

Cultural Workshops

Learn about Korean art and performances first-hand. Interact with young pop-stars who are current KU students. Take workshops in Korean calligraphy, traditional music and Taekwondo. ISC provides other indoor activities such as jazz dance/ hip-hop and yoga that may involve a small supplemental charge.

 

KU Buddy Program

The buddy program is designed to ensure that every student is comfortable in the new surroundings. With their KU Buddy, students can make a lifelong friendship, learn about student life in Korea and venture around Seoul.

 

Day Trips

The stimulating environment of the summer school continues outside the classroom with varied extracurricular activities once a week such as a pottery factory visit, Everland (a sizeable amusement park), Insadong (traditional merchant district), Nanta and the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone separating North and South Korea).

 

Other Tours and Travel Available

Beyond our included orientation and excursions, you will be able to pre-book a wide variety of day, weekend, and week-long tours at a discounted price through our travel partner, STA Travel. These trips provide the ultimate flexibility for you to travel where you want to go, when you want to go, and with whom you want to go. Most trips have open dates, so you can pre-book the trip(s) that interest you, yet choose your dates later on once you’re abroad. This flexibility also means friends that you make from other countries/programs or even your friends and family who are visiting you abroad can also participate. Learn more>

We understand that it can be difficult to find time during a short summer program to really become involved with the community however we challange you to at least try and discover where the experience may take you. It's an awesome way to meet locals, experience the true South Korean culture, and create long lasting memories. Enhance your Experience

Global Citizens Development Modules

The new Global Citizen Development modules are online learning components designed to help you explore your study abroad destination and experience at a whole new level. These modules are not mandatory, however we strongly encourage your participation as they will introduce you to the opportunities and challenges you may encounter when participating in a study abroad program, as well as expose you to cultural insights and knowledge about your host country to help make your program abroad even more successful and fulfilling. Through the 3 modules, you will refine your skills in cross-cultural observation, adaptation, and communication. 

 

 

Learn the Local Language!

Although English  is a common language in many of AsiaLearn’s program destinations, we recognize the need for basic communication in the host language. Therefore, all students will receive:  
  • LiveMocha - Prior to departure you will receive information and instruction for, LiveMocha, an online language learning program to help you learn your host language. Learn at varying levels and at your own speed. Get started now!
  • Lonely Planet Guide & Phrase Book - For both language learning and culture/history/country specific inforamton you will receive a Lonely Planet Guide and Phase book before departure, which will allow you to start planning your adventures and learning how to communicate with locals.
  • Additional Language Resources - To even further your language skill take a look at some of these optional language learning tools.

 

Being Prepared for your Time Abroad

AsiaLearn is there to help you through every step of the study abroad process! This includes making sure you are prepared for your time abroad! Due to the short length of the summer programs we are not able to offer our renowned multi-day orientation known as the Bridging Cultures Program. However we do still offer services that are tailored to helping you have the best experience possible. These include one-on-one pre-departure advising and group webinars prior your departure. The goal of the webinar is to help answer any final questions you may have and to fully prepare you for a summer of personal, social, academic, cultural, and professional Discovery!

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have the required GPA and have completed at least the equivalent of one year of full-time study at the university/college level. Students with a slightly lower GPA than the requirement may be considered on a case by case basis. Please contact our office for more information.
